The Project

Since 1916, the American people have entrusted the National Park Service (NPS) with the care of their national parks. With the help of volunteers and park partners, NPS is proud to safeguard these more than 400 places and to share their stories with more than 275 million visitors every year. The National Park Service desired to improve the user experience related to educational websites by combining multiple education subsites to provide a single streamlined education portal.

The Solution

Fig Leaf Software and NPS team members worked together to envision and create  new Education Portal  leveraging the CommonSpot Content Management System (CMS) and integrated custom ColdFusion applications.

The new NPS Education Portal features:

  • Parks as Classrooms – This application allows teachers to find curriculum materials for public, private and home-schools. Teachers are able to search the materials based on keyword, type, subject, grade range and location. Under Parks as Classrooms teachers are able to plan field trips and other various events based on what is coming up at different parks in their area.
  • Professional Development – Teachers are able to review and provide feedback on the different curriculum materials, events and videos to give insight to other teachers.
  • Distance Learning – With the Education Portal, teachers can now take their students on virtual field trips across the US.  There is information regarding guest speakers such as who is speaking where and what topics they will be speaking on.

The Results

With the NPS Education Portal, instead of having to search through all of the different NPS websites to find information, now it is available in an easy to navigate and central location. National Park Service leadership is very happy with the functionality of the website. Site visitors are very happy, and many are beginning to explore parks they had never heard about, because of the improved navigation.

The NPS Education Portal has received recognition from Fox 5 for the ability to provide students with the chance to take virtual field trips right from their classrooms.
